It was wonderful to see the diverse scenery and wildlife from Wyoming to Montana to South Dakota. Photographic highlights of the trip included:<br />Grand Teton:<br />- sunrise shooting along Mormon Row with the iconic barns in the foreground and the majestic Teton range in the background<br />- enjoying the reflections at Schwabaecher Landing<br />Yellowstone:<br />- catching Old Faithful at sunset<br />- serendipitously catching a neighbor geyser erupting in the background while photographing cloud reflections at Great Fountain geyser<br />- marveling at the other-worldly scenes at Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces<br />Glacier:<br />- forgetting my camera at the hotel the first day we were in the park<br />- wandering through the wonderful Trail of the Cedars<br />- capturing the soft glow of Avalanche Creek<br />- seeing a moose at Josephine Lake<br />- watching the sun break through the storm clouds for sunrise at Swiftcurrent Lake<br />- meeting fellow photographers at the Wild Goose Island Overlook/St. Mary Lake for sunrise<br />Waterton:<br />- being surprised by the unique landscape at Red Rock Canyon<br />- watching momma bears with their cubs<br />Devils Tower:<br />- capturing the looming tower from the entrance road<br />Mount Rushmore:<br />- superimposing my own face next to the Presidents!<br /><br />Look for new images to make their way to the website soon.<br /><br />Every time I travel through the West, I'm reminded how lucky I am to live near such beautiful landscapes. My love for this area rarely diminishes - and when it does, trips like these recapture that passion.<br /><br />I hope you have opportunities to rekindle your passions this Summer.<br /><br />Get Out! But how can you get this effect in your pictures?<br /><br />Many cameras today - including several of the point-and-shoot variety - allow you to attach different filters to the front of your lens. A circular polarizer is a special filter that is very handy for bringing out the bluest skies in your pictures.<br /><br />To use the circular polarizer, attach it to the front of your lens. As you view your scene, rotate the front half of the polarizer. As you do this, you will notice that the color of the sky changes shades. Depending on the time of day and direction you are facing, this change may be dramatic or subtle. Adjust the polarizer to give you the bluest sky and whitest clouds.<br /><br />This filter is also great for reducing the glare on water, plants or metal objects, allowing richer colors throughout your picture. You may not have noticed, but the sky is a deeper color when you are facing 90 degrees from the sun. Here is a little trick that will help reduce the number of "washed out" skies in the background of your pictures.<br /><br />Stand with your back to the sun so that your shadow falls directly in front of you. Hold your arms straight out from your side. See where your hands are pointing?
